One of Toronto's oldest and most beautiful neighbourhoods, Cabbagetown is named after the original Irish settlers who used to grow Cabbages in their front yards. To this day neighbourhood residents are fiercely proud of their history. You can see evidence of this by the many Cabbagetown flags (a green cabbage on a white background) and stained glass windows to be found in the area.
Located north of Shuter up to Wellesley Place, from Sherbourne Street to River Street east to west, Cabbagetown is very centrally located and is close to everything. Houses are of the Victorian nature, with some beautiful examples of both Queen Anne and Second Empire styles exhibited. There are detached, semi-detached and townhouses present. Taking a walk down quaint Berkeley Street will give you a little idea of what one of Toronto's finest neighbourhoods is about.
The main business area is Parliament Street, so named because it was the original location of the Ontario Parliament buildings. These days you will find great restaurants, pubs, butchers and coffee shops lining the street.
Prices are more expensive to the east of Parliament Street, partly because it is near the beautiful Riverdale Park. Go there on a Sunday in the summer and you will find a great farmer's market.
